Youth Action 2023 Journey

Youth Action is a youth development program to teach youth leadership skills.  In July, 2023 it was held at Thompson River University in Kamloops, and I had the opportunity to be part of it.  My week at Youth Action was incredibly enjoyable.  I met many people that I believe will be lifelong friends.  I learned many leadership skills that I am applying in my life.  The leadership skills were introduced through many short interactive workshops.  We had opportunities to practice what we learned.

One thing that particularly stands out in my mind was learning to lead and direct, instead of telling someone what to do.  There were lots of very good examples introduced of how to do that.  They used worksheets, videos and true life examples to make the information applicable to us.

All of the participants stayed in dorm rooms at the university.  I had three roommates and we became very good friends by the end of the week.

I applied to be part of Youth Action.  Before

my application was approved, I was first, interviewed to see if I was a good candidate for leadership training.  This event is only available to 4H participants.  It is offered to youth between the ages of 14 and 15.  The desire is to see young adults gain strong leadership skills.

Overall this was one of the highlights of my summer.  I am really thankful for the opportunity to have this experience.  It has already benefited me numerous times and I know I have learned skills that will help me lead in the future.  I recommend, if you have the opportunity to attend Youth Action, to take advantage of it.  You will gain lifelong friendships, may help overcome shyness, and you will definitely gain great leadership skills.
