Charlize H. & her rabbit Oreo
Charlize H. is a valued member of the Woodlands 4-H Club in Langley.
Her favorite part of 4-H are the fairs, she loves to meet new people, do all of the activities, and show her amazing and adorable rabbit, Oreo.
Charlize is one of the 15 winners from the Canada-wide Agrifood challenge. Each of the winners were awarded $500 for their club. This is a lot of money to help our club and we are all grateful for her work.
She entered the online contest with a digital board titled Allergies, Food Choices, and Sustainable Agriculture: Making Food accessible for all. Charlize started her project by completing the food for thought activity book, which is available on the 4-H Canada website.
She then brainstormed her ideas and settled on a topic. After that, Charlize attended fairs to take pictures of foods that were allergy friendly. Before starting her digital board, she needed data. She learned coding and organized her information to start the project. Using an app called SurveyMonkey, she created a survey and submitted it on a social media platform. She did this to ask multiple people about their allergies. This helped her understand how others dealt with their allergies, so she could make her project as helpful as possible. She was surprised at how many people had taken the survey, and how many of them had the same allergies as she does. She is allergic to tree nuts, dairy products, and eggs.
Next, she organised all of the information she got back from her survey into her report to show everything she had learned. It took her 8 months to complete this challenge, she worked very hard on it and is proud of the end result, and so is her club. The fully done online board and the survey are no longer open to the public, but have helped many people understand allergies and how important it is to make food safe and accessible for all.
